Years ago I ran across a show of Tantric Paintings from India at The Drawing Center in NYC by accident, and it was the happiest accident that could have happened to my work. They are small, anonymous, and made with gouache on pieced-together pieces of paper which are sometimes beautifully water-stained. Apparently they’re used as guides for meditation, and each design is repeated through the centuries. As a group they strengthen each other as you being to notice repeated motifs and symbols.

For years there was no book about them until one published recently by Siglio Press. I bought it and it’s been a constant source of inspiration. I try to achieve this level of un-self-conscious powerful simplicity and grace with my work, but I know I can never hope to achieve this level.

Here’s a Pinterest page full of them.
